Final Results: Best Warrior Competition

Everyone has been asking me the defining question, who actually won the "Best Warrior of the Year" Compeition?

First a quick recap, Brian competed from Oct. 1st to Oct. 5th in the best Warrior of the Year Competition. Brian is 38 years old and most of the competitors were in their 20's. Brian made it out of the event (luckily) with only some minor blisters, bruises, cuts and some weight loss. When I finally saw Brian on Oct. 11th, all I could say that he looked haggard. It must have something to do with spending a week with only 3-4 hours of sleep a night, doing exhausting physical activity all day in high heat and humidity (which my California boy was not used to). Brian's face now has some yellow remnants of bruises around his eyes and throat.

The winners were announced at a Pentagon luncheon on Oct. 8th. The first place winner was Spc. Heyz Seeker. He is an Army Ranger. If you don't know what an Army Ranger is, it's the best of the best from the Army Corp. He was actually a noncommissioned officer before he re-enlisted with the Army Rangers. The 2nd place finalist was Sgt. Jamiell E. Goforth. She is intriguing. She had a full scholarship to Stanford and turned it down to join the Army. She helped out in Hurricane Katrina and also went to Iraq. Brian said that she was extremely smart and tough as nails. When the competition began Brian and her were running neck and neck. Seeker won out at the end because he slowly and steadily did well on each event. (Whereas Goforth and my husband did very well on the cerebral events and not quite as well on the physical events.) My husband, Brian Hancock, won 3rd place. I must say that was pretty good considering he was older than everyone else at the competition and certainly older than the two people who beat him out.

From Left to Right: 1st Place: Spc. Heyz Seeker, 2nd Place: Sgt. Jamiell E. Goforth, 3rd: Spc. Brian Hancock

I have also been asked what the winner of the competition gets. All of the competitors gets either an IPod Nano, PSP or a digital camera. A $50 Gift Card and some free music downloads. The winner also gets $10,000. Darn, we could have really used the extra $10,000. :-)

So where does Brian go from now? Well, he has been nominated to be a commissioned officer with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Brian just signed his papers yesterday and will be going through an officer commissioning ceremony Tues., Oct. 16th. Now I must say that the timing for his officer commisioning is very good. Brian's Army Reserve Unit has been mobilizing to go to war every other year now and it has just been a year since his garrison returned from Iraq. However, since Brian just received his commission and since he needs to go to Officer Training School first--he is not eligible to go to Iraq right now. Wheeh! However, he will go eventually. I just hope that things get delayed enough so that the war is either over or has started to wind down.

Brian tells me that I am naive. He says that the war in Iraq will certainly last for a generation. It will not end anytime too soon. I would hope that my husband is wrong--but unfortunately he is probably correct.
